Another hat, too big for Mei

Finished the hat I was working on for Mei. The yarn is a cheap, Lion Brand one. Unfortunately, I misjudged how it was going to knit up, and it's going to be too big on Mei. Oh well, there's still yarn left, I can just do another one.

Pattern (for a large head)

  • Cast on 56 st on US size 10 DPNs (or circular). I used knitting-into-thin-air cast on.

  • Knit until entire hat, with brim rolled, is 6 inches tall.

  • Begin decreases. Alternate rows of decreases and rows of just knitting. Decrease in groups of 7,6,5,4,3,2 stitches.

  • Pull yarn through remaining stitches. Pull tight, tie off. Weeve in ends.

Sam wants an interesting take on this hat ... a hat with a pony tail hole. I'm going to have to try that.

Edit: I made a hat a couple days later, same yarn, same needles, but starting with 49 st instead.

Pattern (for a small to medium head)

24-hour mobeus scarf

So, last night I started this scarf. Tonight I finished it. It is a mobeus scarf -- only one side. Mobeus strips made from paper never impressed me as a kid, but this was truly mindbending to make ... trying to figure out what was going on taxed my poor little brain cells to the utmost.

Edit, came back and added this picture of the scarf after blocking and drying. It has a tendency to curl, but not nearly as bad as before blocking.

Pattern for Mobeus Scarf

Yarn: Cascade Pastaza, hand dyed by hollyk603.
Gauge: That's the great thing about scarves, it doesn't much matter. (For reference, I think it ended up about 3.5 stitches per inch on size 8.
Needles: Circular needle at least 36 inches long (in this case a size 8).

  • Cast-on stitches to make around 34 to 36 inches in length (in this case I cast on 136). I used the cast on that is like "knitting into thin air" as the boy calls it.

  • Make sure you don't have any twists in the cast on, then prepare to join ... sort of.

  • In the back of each stitch, pick up (don't knit) another stitch. This will require a half turn of the stitches.

  • Now you will have twice as many stitches as you started with, and your circular needle will look like a contortionist, threading by each stitch twice. It's quite a sight to behold.

  • Knit. Until the scarf is as wide as you want it to be.

  • One row purl, followed by casting off by P, P, pull first stitch over second. (My silly attempt to reduce curling. =/)

  • Block to reduce curl.
